Cake of the Month: Pirate Cake by Jane Rouse (October 2011)

October 14, 2011

The Cake of the Month for October 2011 was an easy choice: our long-time volunteer Jane Rouse made a gorgeous Pirate Cake for 7-year-old Ben from Oxford. Given all the positive feedback the cake received among bakers, we were curious to learn about the story behind the cake.

Q: Jane, you baked this wonderful pirate cake. How did that actually come about?

When I first contact a family I ask if they have any ideas about the sort of cake their child would like. Sometimes they don’t really have fixed ideas and I might give a few suggestions. On this occasion the Mum was quite definite that her son would like a pirate cake as she told me that he is really into pirates at the moment!! A perfect theme for a 7-year-old boy.

Q: Was it a difficult one to make?

This cake was actually pretty easy to make. Just a basic circular cake but with ears and a few other bits added on. The beard was made from grated chocolate and attached to the cake with melted chocolate. I had previously made a fairy-girl cake using a similar method for her hair. The main problem was where to put the writing and in the end I opted for a separate strip of icing for the ‘Happy Birthday Ben’.

Q: Did you get any feedback? How did people like the cake?

The family were really pleased with the cake and told me that they were planning a pirate themes party that evening.

Q: How did you actually become a volunteer for Free Cakes for Kids in Oxford?

I love making birthday cakes for my own children. I like the creative challenge and, obviously, eating the cake!! It’s great when children are so excited by a cake made into a character or something that they like. When I first heard about FCFK I was really keen to volunteer and contacted Henriette straight away.
